What is it IgY?
IgY (egg immunoglobulin) are immunoglobulins produced by hens to protect their chicks during their first weeks of life against emerging pathogens. It is the equivalent of immunoglobulin G (IgG) in mammalian colostrum. IgY is a completely natural product. Every egg sold in the supermarket contains IgY.
IgY technology has long been used to provide clear benefits in human medicine and animal production.
The ‘normal’ antibody production in mammals involves painful and stressful procedures such as immunisation, bleeding, and necropsy. The only stress factor in the production of egg antibodies is hyperimmunisation with the pathogen or its parts. The rest – the collection of the eggs – is non-invasive (Ikemori et al., 1993). The European Centre for the Validation of Alternative Methods (ECVAM), one of the European Institutes for Health and Consumer Protection, strongly recommends egg immunoglobulins as an alternative to mammalian antibodies (Schade et al., 1996).
